A suspected armed robber was shot dead by police during an early morning operation in Nairobi’s White Castle area off Juja Road.
Police said his accomplice escaped with injuries.
A team of police officers who were on foot patrol at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday received intelligence that two young men armed with weapons were terrorising members of the public in the area.
The officers rushed to the scene and reportedly encountered the two suspects. Police said they challenged the men to surrender, but the suspects allegedly defied the order and advanced towards the officers while armed.
In the ensuing confrontation, officers opened fire, fatally injuring one of the suspects.
The second suspect escaped despite reportedly sustaining injuries and is believed to have fled towards the Mathare River area.
Police said they recovered a pistol and a knife believed to have been in the possession of the suspects during the operation.
The body of the deceased, whose identity had not been established by the time of filing the report, was moved to the City Mortuary pending identification and a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched a manhunt for the escaped suspect as investigations into the incident continue.
Meanwhile, police in Vihiga County have launched investigations into the death of a 28-year-old man who succumbed to injuries after being allegedly assaulted by a mob over claims of involvement in criminal activities.
The incident was reported in Mwoki Village in Masana Sub-location, South Maragoli Location on Tuesday.
According to police, the deceased, identified as Brian Anim Adamba, was allegedly subjected to mob justice at Mwoki Junction on the evening of June 8 at around 7:30 p.m.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a group of residents attacked him after accusing him of engaging in criminal activities within the area.
He reportedly sustained serious injuries during the assault before being rescued by his brother and uncle.
The injured man was rushed to hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday while receiving medical care.
Police officers visited the scene and documented it as part of ongoing investigations.
The body was moved to the mortuary at Vihiga County Teaching and Referral Hospital, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have condemned incidents of mob justice and urged members of the public to hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies instead of taking the law into their own hands.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
