Three people suffocated as they worked at an oil production company in Athi River, Machakos County.
Athi River South subcounty police commander Mary Njoki said the trio suffocated at about 11.00am Friday December 23 before their bodies were found.
The men were removing slug from a water treatment pit when the incident happened.
Witnesses said when they got inside the pit to remove the waste, they suffocated.
Njoki said they are investigating the incident.
She said it was against safety precautions for workers to get into the pit and manually clean it adding the three didn’t have safety gears other than face masks.
“It a requirement that you get into the pit with a safety masks if you have to,” Njoki said.
Njoki said the waste shouldn’t be removed by human beings, but a pump.
The bodies were removed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem and further probe.
Other experts were called to join the probe.
