A devastating building collapse on the Spanish island of Majorca has resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to sixteen others, as confirmed by local emergency services.
The collapse occurred at the Medusa Beach Club, a beachside restaurant located on Cartago Street in Palma de Majorca, the regional capital.
The incident took place around 20:30 local time (19:30 BST), with reports indicating that several people are still believed to be trapped in the wreckage.
Emergency services were finalizing rescue operations and securing the area shortly after midnight local time.
The floor of the establishment gave way on Thursday evening, causing patrons to fall into the basement, where other customers and staff were present.
Palma Fire Chief Eder García informed local media that the majority of those affected were foreigners and tourists, according to El Pais.
A spokesperson for the local police suggested that the balcony might have collapsed due to excessive weight, although the exact cause remains under investigation.
Rescue teams have already pulled one man from the debris with a broken arm, and efforts continue under the assumption that more individuals are trapped.
Officials have requested onlookers to remain silent to aid in hearing any potential calls for help from survivors.
Palma’s mayor, Jaime Martínez, along with the deputy mayor of tourism, has visited the scene.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and stated that he was closely monitoring the situation, ready to provide any necessary assistance.
Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Islands, also conveyed her shock and condolences.
She thanked the emergency services and acknowledged the support from Prime Minister Sánchez.
Majorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, is a popular tourist destination, with over 17 million visitors last year.
