Two men have been charged in connection with the theft of a Banksy artwork from a central London gallery, according to the Metropolitan Police.
The theft occurred around 11:00 PM GMT on Sunday at a gallery located on New Cavendish Street.
The artwork in question, titled “Girl with Balloon,” was the only piece stolen during the burglary.
Fortunately, it has since been recovered.
The accused, Larry Fraser, 47, of Evelyn Denington Road in Beckton, and James Love, 53, of Elvin Drive in North Stifford, appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
They are due to appear at Kingston Crown Court on October 9 for further proceedings.
“Girl with Balloon” is one of Banksy’s most iconic works.
The piece is part of a series by the renowned but anonymous street artist.
The artwork garnered significant attention in 2018 when a similar piece was partially shredded after selling for over £1 million at auction.
This dramatic event only heightened the public’s fascination with Banksy’s work.
The Metropolitan Police have stated that their investigation is ongoing.
They are working to ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined.
The recovery of the artwork is a significant development, and authorities are focusing on bringing those responsible for the theft to justice.
