Two men were arrested in Nakuru in connection with the theft of Sh620,000 from a locked vehicle after police linked them to a suspected bank-tailing syndicate.
The suspects were arrested on Friday by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Nakuru West at Westside Mall while allegedly targeting customers withdrawing cash from an Equity Bank branch.
Police said the arrests followed investigations into a theft reported on July 3, 2026, in which a man withdrew Sh620,000 from Equity Bank’s Westside Mall branch before driving his Toyota Prado to Stella Hotel in the London area for lunch.
While the victim was away, thieves broke into the locked vehicle and stole the cash.
Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from Westside Mall, which allegedly captured two men discreetly trailing the victim from the bank before the theft occurred.
Acting on intelligence, detectives mounted surveillance at the mall and arrested the two suspects as they allegedly lay in wait for other unsuspecting bank customers.
The suspects were escorted to Kaptembwo Police Station together with a red 2015 Mazda Demio, believed to have been used during their operations.
Police said the pair are being processed for arraignment as investigations continue to establish whether they are linked to other similar incidents reported in Nakuru and elsewhere.
Such incidents have been common in the area amid efforts to trace and contain those behind the trend.
Police believe the gang hangs in banks where they monitor transactions and later trail their targets to launch attacks for money.
The police say they are pursuing more suspects operating in major urban areas.
