South African artist Tyla has launched her debut album, titled “TYLA“, hot on the heels of her recent triumph at the Grammy Awards.
The 22-year-old rose to fame last year with her hit track “Water”, which soared to the top 10 in the U.S.
Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and secured a spot in the top 5 in Britain.
The song belongs to the amapiano genre, a fusion of house, jazz, and log drums originating from South Africa.
In an interview with Reuters, Tyla shared her thoughts on the album, stating, “It’s a melting pot of all the influences I had growing up—pop, R&B, amapiano, and Afrobeats, representing the sounds of home.”
Collaborating with renowned artists such as U.S. rapper Travis Scott and Nigerian singer Tems, Tyla aimed to create a unique blend that resonates with her diverse background.
Reflecting on her recent Grammy win for the best African music performance, Tyla expressed disbelief, saying, “It’s literally so crazy … every day
I have to remind myself that that actually happened and that it’s real.”
This recognition underscores the rising global prominence of Afrobeats and other African music genres, propelled in part by platforms like TikTok.
Tyla’s breakthrough track “Water” gained widespread popularity through TikTok, with users worldwide participating in the #WaterChallenge, mimicking her dance moves.
She remarked on the genre’s growing appeal beyond Africa, stating, “It’s really cool that other people are now catching on and enjoying it.”
Recently, Tyla teased a potential collaboration with BLACKPINK’s Lisa, sharing a video of them listening to “TYLA”.
When asked about it, she confirmed, “We’ve been speaking about making a song together, so yes, for sure.”
The prospect of joining forces with the K-pop star hints at exciting future endeavors for Tyla.
