The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has committed USD 15 million (approximately Sh.2 billion) to support Kenya in addressing the severe aftermath of recent devastating floods that have affected large portions of the country.
This significant aid package is being provided under the guidance of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In a statement on the social media platform X,
the UAE Embassy in Nairobi announced: “UAE announces USD 15 Million in solidarity with Kenya after deadly floods, With the order of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.”
Additionally, Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the International Humanitarian Affairs Council, remarked that under the wise leadership of His Highness the President, the UAE is committed to humanitarian efforts on a global scale.
He emphasized the country’s readiness to respond swiftly to humanitarian emergencies, offering support to those in need, regardless of geographical boundaries.
The UAE’s gesture of solidarity follows just days after King Charles III of the United Kingdom extended his condolences to Kenyans affected by the deadly floods.
In a letter to President William Ruto, the King, along with his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, expressed their sympathy, highlighting their concern over the impact of the heavy rainfall on Kenya and the broader region.
“It was with great concern that my wife and I learned recently of the terrible flooding that has ravaged Kenya and the region, and which continues to impact so many of your people,” King Charles III wrote in the letter shared by the UK High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan, on X.
The severe flooding has resulted in a tragic loss of life and widespread displacement.
As of May 8, the national death toll stood at 257, with 188 individuals injured due to the torrential rains.
The floods have disrupted the lives of 293,661 people and displaced 54,837 households across the country.
The assistance from the UAE and the expressions of solidarity from global leaders offer some hope to Kenya as it navigates through this challenging period.
Efforts to provide aid and restore stability are underway, but the road to recovery will be long and requires ongoing support.
