Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed his willingness to hand over the Jubilee Party chairmanship following a High Court ruling upholding provisions of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act governing the transition of retired presidents from formal political party leadership.
In a statement issued through his communications office, Uhuru welcomed the ruling, saying it provided the legal clarity needed to resolve the long-running dispute over the party’s leadership transition.
The former President said he had received the decision with respect for the judiciary, adding that the ruling should not be interpreted as a restriction on his political life.
“The 4th President of the Republic of Kenya acknowledges that leadership is not the chair one occupies; it is the trust one cultivates,” the statement said.
On the delayed handover of the Jubilee Party chairmanship, Uhuru’s office said the process had not been held up by reluctance, but by an internal dispute that required legal clarification.
“With the court’s guidance, that path is now clear,” the statement said.
The former President affirmed his willingness to facilitate the handover openly, lawfully and in accordance with the Jubilee Party constitution.
He also expressed optimism that the party’s internal processes would now proceed without hindrance.
“The former President affirms his absolute willingness to see the handover completed openly, lawfully, and in strict accordance with the Party’s constitution,” the statement said.
Uhuru welcomed what his office described as a new chapter for Jubilee, anchored in the rule of law, the party’s constitution and the emergence of the next generation of leadership.
The statement was signed by Kanze Dena-Mararo, Secretary of Communications in the Office of the Fourth President of the Republic of Kenya.
