Peter Odhiambo Agoro, the Chairman of the Union of Kenyan Civil Organizations, has been released on police bail following his arrest earlier this week.
Agoro was detained on Tuesday by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) at a hotel in Nairobi and subsequently held at the Kilimani Police Station.
His arrest followed accusations that he had allegedly extorted three million shillings from the Chief Executive Officer of a government organization.
The EACC claims that Agoro sought the money in exchange for halting investigations into allegations of procurement-related misconduct involving the CEO.
According to the EACC’s official statement, Agoro had initially demanded three million shillings from the government official.
However, after discussions, he reportedly agreed to reduce the sum to two million shillings.
This amount was to be paid in two installments.
The first payment of 1.5 million shillings was to be followed by a second installment of 500,000 shillings.
Agoro was caught in an EACC sting operation shortly after receiving the initial payment of 1.5 million shillings.
The payment was made in U.S. dollar currency, according to reports.
The operation had been planned after the EACC received a complaint from the government official, who agreed to cooperate with the commission in setting up the arrest.
The EACC’s involvement is part of a broader effort to crack down on corruption and fraudulent activities involving public officials.
Agoro’s case has drawn public attention due to his prominent position as the head of a civil organization that advocates for good governance and integrity.
His release on police bail does not signal the end of the investigation, as authorities are expected to continue their inquiry into the matter.
The suspect may face formal charges in court depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
The EACC has pledged to take firm action against anyone involved in corruption or extortion.
