Why Former Governors Are Scheduled For Trial This Week

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria are set to appear in the Milimani anti-corruption court in Nairobi for trial on September 25 and 26, respectively.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has brought charges against both for allegedly misusing public resources for personal gain.

Mike Sonko, also known as Mike Mbuvi Kioko, faces accusations alongside three others for allegedly awarding illegal tenders.

The case involves claims of embezzling 24.1 million shillings from Nairobi County in collaboration with associates from a private firm.

A verdict in Sonko’s case is expected to be delivered on September 25.

Meanwhile, Mwangi wa Iria is accused, along with others, of making improper payments totaling 547 million shillings to Top Image Consultants, a company linked to the former governor.

The EACC seeks to recover this amount as well as two parcels of land allegedly obtained through corrupt practices.

The verdict for Mwangi wa Iria will be announced on September 26.

Additionally, the case against former Migori Governor Okoth Obado will also be revisited on September 26 at the same court.

Obado, along with seven co-defendants, faces charges related to conspiracy to commit economic crimes.

The allegations against him involve the misuse of 74.5 million shillings through representatives he appointed during the financial years spanning from 2013 to 2017.

These trials highlight ongoing efforts by the EACC to tackle corruption and restore accountability in Kenya’s public sector.
