The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to address serious claims he recently made about attempts on his life.
Gachagua alleged multiple assassination plots, prompting DCI officials to call him in for clarification.
Detectives, concerned that the claims could go unchecked, issued a formal request through DCI Director of Communication John Marete, seeking to “set the record straight” on the matter.
According to a senior DCI officer, “These are serious allegations, and we need to investigate whether any attempts were made.
This is more of a clarification session than a formal summons.”
Gachagua is expected to appear at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road on Tuesday, October 22.
However, it remains unclear whether he will comply, as his legal team is reportedly in discussions about the next steps.
On Sunday, after being discharged from Karen Hospital in Nairobi, where he had been hospitalized during the Senate’s vote to impeach him, Gachagua held a press conference in which he claimed there had been two assassination attempts on his life.
He alleged that on August 30, undercover police officers in Kisumu entered his hotel room and attempted to poison his food, a plot he claims was thwarted just in time.
He further stated that on September 3, National Intelligence Service (NIS) officers made a second attempt in Nyeri, targeting both him and Kikuyu elders with poisoned food.
Gachagua also linked the failed assassination attempts to the impeachment process, stating, “When the assassination plans failed, the impeachment motion was initiated.”
He warned that his personal security had been withdrawn and directly implicated President William Ruto, saying, “If anything happens to me, President Ruto should be held responsible.”
In response to these statements, DCI’s letter emphasized the gravity of Gachagua’s accusations, noting, “These claims, coming from a person of your standing, cannot be dismissed.
We invite you to formally record your statement so we can launch a thorough investigation.”
During his press conference, Gachagua expressed deep disappointment in President Ruto, accusing him of betrayal and stating that he never expected such actions from someone he had supported to rise to power.
Ruto has remained silent on both Gachagua’s impeachment and his recent claims of assassination attempts.
The president has since nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to replace Gachagua, though Kindiki’s appointment is currently on hold due to legal challenges against the impeachment.
