Two men were shot dead and another reported missing after an armed group attacked camel herders near Ngatho Dam along the border of Igembe North and Igembe Central in Meru County.
The incident occurred at about 11am on August 25, 2026, when a group of about 30 armed men reportedly descended on the camel herders’ manyatta and opened an attack.
Police officers later visited the scene following an earlier report of a shooting incident.
The officers were led to the scene where they found the bodies of two men identified as Bishar Matan, 80, and Abdi Sagwi, 35.
Police said Matan had sustained gunshot wounds to the left side of his abdomen, with the bullet exiting through the right side, as well as another wound to the chest with the bullet exiting through his back.
Sagwi was reportedly shot in the neck, with the bullet exiting through the back of his head.
A third man, identified as Abdi Ahmed, 75, was reported missing following the attack.
Police recovered a 7.62mm cartridge at the scene as investigations into the shooting continued.
The bodies were moved to the mortuary at Isiolo Hospital, where they are being preserved pending postmortem examinations.
Police said a joint clearance patrol would be conducted in the area in the morning as security agencies intensify efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and trace the missing man.
The motive for the attack and the identities of the assailants had not been established by the time of reporting.
The area has been a flashpoint with some locals opposing movement of herders there.
More police officers were sent to the area to tame possible retaliations.
Meru is emerging a point of interest with the rise in cases of cattle rustling.
Officials have launched operations in the area and neighbouring counties to tame the practice.
The affected counties include Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and Turkana.
The cattle stolen from herders in the areas are transported and sold elsewhere.
