Thirty people, including 26 students, narrowly escaped death after a bus they were traveling in was involved in a severe accident at Sachang’wan black spot along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway yesterday.
According to Molo Sub-County Police Commander Timon Odingo, the accident involved a Rockside Academy bus from Nairobi, two other vehicles, and a speeding crane that struck them from behind.
The pupils, accompanied by three teachers and one non-teaching staff member, were returning to Nairobi after participating in music festivals in Uasin Gishu County.
“Fortunately, none of the injuries were fatal,” said Odingo.
“The injured were swiftly taken to hospitals in Molo and Nakuru by good Samaritans.
We managed to clear the scene quickly and reopen the road.”
Witnesses reported that the crane’s driver lost control while descending a hill, causing the crane to collide with several vehicles.
Phillip Yegon, a witness, described the scene: “The crane overtook us at high speed, and despite traffic police attempts to flag it down, the driver couldn’t stop.
It swerved and eventually landed in a ditch.”
The bus wreckage was promptly attended to, and all 30 individuals were rescued and taken to Molo Sub County and Nakuru Level Five hospitals.
Unfortunately, one responder was caught stealing a piano from the wrecked bus and was handed over to the police.
Resident Alex Mutai noted that the median barrier prevented the crane from crashing into oncoming traffic, potentially averting a more devastating outcome.
Residents have called on the Kenya National Highways Authority to implement additional safety measures, such as speed bumps and runaway ramps.
In related incidents, a matatu crash at Migaa black spot on Friday left nine seriously injured, with some victims transferred to Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Additionally, a tragic accident in Narok County on Monday resulted in the deaths of five people, including four foreign tourists, in a collision between a truck and a Land Cruiser.
Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reveal over 1,700 road fatalities in the past seven months, with around 3,500 Kenyans dying annually in road accidents despite ongoing safety efforts.
