31 people including 17 children ever as young as two years were rescued while confined to fasting in a house in Kamwene B Village, Njoro Sub-County on April 27.
The rescued told police they were in a fellowship, fasting and praying.
Some were badly emaciated then.
Police said that they were notified by Rosemary Tuwei from Uasin Gishu that their daughter was confined in a house in Kamwene B.
After visiting the scene, the police found her in a house owned by 62-year-old Hellen Wanjiru Weru.
In the house, there were other 14 adults aged between 23 and 64 years and 17 children between two and 15 years fasting.
Preliminary investigation indicated that Wanjiru was the spiritual leader of the “Army Rurwama Cult.”
They established that Tuwei had secured a Community Nursing Job at Nigeria GK Dispensary but she was lured by her husband to the cult.
“She was supposed to report on April 26, 2023, but refused and traveled with her husband named Alfred Ocholla to Kamwene ‘B’ village, Mugumini Sub location, Lusiru location within Kihingo ward,” the police said.
Those rescued were taken to the police station for further investigation.
The woman was too detained as part of the probe.
The incident comes amid ongoing exhumation from Shakahola forest in Kilifi by police following a starvation cult.
Leading pastors Ezekiel Odero and Paul Mackenzie are in custody over the Kilifi cult probe where more than 110 bodies have been recovered in a week-long exhumation.
34 people have been rescued from starving death. They told the police they were told to fast and pray to death to meet Jesus.
The probe into the issue is ongoing.
All security officials in the area have been moved following the discovery.
