The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results have been disclosed, with the highest-scoring candidate achieving an impressive 428 out of 500 marks.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu unveiled the results for the 1,406,557 candidates who took the KCPE exams this year.
Addressing the press at the new Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) headquarters in South B, Nairobi, CS Machogu highlighted that 8,525 candidates secured over 400 marks, constituting 0.60% of this year’s class.
Furthermore, 352,782 candidates fell within the 300-399 mark range, making up 24.92% of the cohort.
The 200-299 marks bracket had the highest number of candidates at 658,278, representing 48.49%.
Additionally, 38,3025 candidates scored between 100 and 199 marks, accounting for 27.05% of the total candidate pool.
Those with less than 99 marks numbered 2,060, making up 0.15% of the entire group.
In terms of gender distribution, 51.3% of this year’s class consisted of male candidates, while females comprised 48.7%.
CS Machogu noted that “female candidates performed slightly better than their male counterparts in English language, Kiswahili, and Kenya Sign Language, while the male candidates performed slightly better than their female counterparts in Maths and Science.”
Highlighting the examination’s integrity, Machogu commended the minimal instances of malpractice, with only two candidates implicated.
Notably, there were 9,354 candidates who missed the examination, and they were given the opportunity to take the exam in January.
The KCPE examination, which took place between October 30 and November 1, marked the conclusion of the 8-4-4 education system in primary schools, which had been in place for 39 years since 1985.
The new 2-6-3-3-3 competency-based curriculum (CBC), introduced in 2017, replaces the former system.
CS Machogu assured the nation that “all education indicators show that the cohort is undergoing quality learning and teaching,” emphasizing the readiness of curriculum materials to support learners under the new system.
