Garisa, Kwale, Kilifi Counties Lead In 18-Years-Old Students Who Sat For 2023 KCPE


The 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results have unveiled distinct demographic patterns, revealing that marginalized counties in Kenya had a higher percentage of candidates above 18 years.

According to the Ministry of Education, Garisa, Kwale, Turkana, Kilifi, and Mandera emerged as the leading counties in this category.

Mandera took the lead with 33.90 percent of candidates above 18 years out of the 1,406,557 students who sat for the exam. Garrisa followed closely at 25.86 percent, trailed by Turkana, Kwale, and Kilifi at 24.50 percent, 16.90 percent, and 15.66 percent, respectively.

Conversely, the counties reporting a higher proportion of students below 12 years included Baringo, Wajir, Bomet, Kericho, and West Pokot.

In terms of gender distribution, Mandera County stood out with 77 percent of male candidates, surpassing the female counterparts.

The Ministry of Education’s report provides insights into the diverse demographics influencing educational dynamics across different regions.

The top-performing candidate in this year’s KCPE achieved an impressive score of 428 out of 500. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced that only 8,525 candidates scored above 400 marks, constituting a mere 0.60 percent.

Breaking down the results further, 352,782 candidates scored between 300 to 399 marks, accounting for 24.29 percent of the total. Another 658,278 candidates fell within the 200 to 299 marks range, representing 48.49 percent. Furthermore, 383,025 candidates scored between 100 to 199 marks, while 2,060 candidates scored between 0 to 99 marks.

To address the situation of candidates who registered but were unable to sit for the exams, Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO David Njeng’ere announced special exams to be held within 30 days. The Form 1 placement process is set to be completed by the end of December 2023, providing clarity on the academic journey for the successful candidates.
