Crackdown On Illegal Alcohol Distilling In Kiambu County

In a recent operation in Kiambu County, authorities apprehended three individuals and confiscated 6,000 liters of ethanol from a residence in Kiamumbi village.

Kiambu Police Commander Mohammed Badell disclosed that a tip-off from a concerned citizen prompted the investigation into the unregistered distillery, resulting in the seizure of the contraband.

“Following information from a member of the public, we launched an investigation into an illicit distillation operation in Kiamumbi village, leading to the seizure of a significant quantity of ethanol,” stated Badell.

Simultaneously, a Githunguri court has granted law enforcement permission to dispose of illegal brews presented as evidence in ongoing cases.

Notably, brews such as Chagaga, Kangara, and Muratina, along with three gambling machines, were incinerated.

“The court has granted us the authority to destroy illicit alcohol confiscated during our operations.

This supports the government’s efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal substances,” remarked Githunguri Deputy Commissioner David Juma.

The government has enacted stringent measures to combat the illicit trade of drugs and alcohol, recognizing it as a grave national security concern.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced new guidelines on the sale of these substances, emphasizing the suspension of licenses for second-generation alcohol manufacturers.

“In accordance with section 4(2)k of the Preservation of Public Security Act, all licenses issued by the Kenya Revenue Authority and Kenya Bureau of Standards to distillers and manufacturers of second-generation alcohol are suspended with immediate effect,” stated Kindiki.

Furthermore, Kindiki highlighted that existing valid licenses will undergo thorough scrutiny within a 21-day period, signaling a rigorous vetting process to ensure compliance with regulations.
