Interior Minister Kindiki Declares Public Holiday For Idd-Ul-Fitr Celebration

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has officially declared Wednesday, April 10, 2024, as a public holiday in Kenya to commemorate Idd-ul-Fitr.

In a notice published in the gazette on Tuesday, April 9, Kindiki made the announcement, stating, “IT IS notified for the general information of the public that, in the exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act.

The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Wednesday, the 10th of April, 2024, shall be a Public Holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr.”

Idd-ul-Fitr signifies the conclusion of the sacred month of Ramadan, which commenced on March 11, 2024.

This occasion holds immense significance for Muslims worldwide, symbolizing a period of joy, contemplation, and gratitude, following a month dedicated to fasting and spiritual development.

Commonly referred to as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” Idd-ul-Fitr commences upon the sighting of the new moon, followed by the congregation of Muslims for a special prayer known as the Salat al-Eid.

Following the prayer, Muslims exchange greetings of “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) and engage in the tradition of sharing gifts and food with loved ones.

Integral to the celebration is the practice of zakat al fitr, a form of charitable giving whereby Muslims contribute a specified amount of money or food to those less fortunate before the Eid prayer.

This gesture ensures that everyone can partake in the festivities and have the means to celebrate joyously.
