Kenyan 800m Athletes Gear Up For Paris Olympics Showdown

With only two weeks left until the Paris Olympics, Kenya’s 800m athletes, both men and women, are intensifying their preparations to leave a mark on the global stage.

Leading the charge for the women’s team is world 800m champion Mary Moraa, alongside teammates Lilian Odira and Vivian Chebet, aiming to dominate their event and secure medals for Kenya.

The men’s team features world silver medalist Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Wycliffe Kinyamal, and Koitatoi Kidali, who qualified through rigorous trials in June.

They are determined to replicate Kenya’s past Olympic successes, inspired by heroes like Pamela Jelimo and Wilfred Bungei.

Mary Moraa expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, highlighting their dedicated training and unwavering focus on achieving better results than before.

“We have trained diligently as a team, seeking strength from God to reach the finals and bring home medals,” Moraa remarked, reflecting on their three years of preparation leading up to this moment.

However, Moraa expressed disappointment at not facing USA’s Athing Mu, the reigning champion, due to her recent injury.

Despite this setback, Moraa acknowledged Mu as a formidable competitor and regretted missing the opportunity to challenge her again after their encounters in previous championships.

In the men’s team, Olympic debutant Koitatoi Kidali emphasized the importance of speed endurance in his training regimen, crucial for navigating the challenges of the Olympics.

The Kenyan athletes face tough competition, including the recent world-leading performance by Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati.

Nevertheless, they are determined to shine on the Olympic podium, fueled by rigorous training sessions and meticulous race simulations under the guidance of Athletics Kenya’s middle distance coach, Bernard Ouma.

As their final preparations continue at their intensive training camp in Miramas, France, the Kenyan team remains focused on their goal of achieving excellence at the Paris Olympics.
