The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) updated the public on how it’s dealing with cases involving hate speech.
NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia shared that they’ve received a total of 67 cases.
Right now, they’re investigating 43 cases at different stages.
Two cases are in court, and they’ve completed 13 cases, while 13 others were resolved through talks under the NCI Act of 2008.
NCIC also noted 44 cases on social media that involve discrimination.
Among these, 24 cases are about stirring people up, 6 cases involve hateful language, 93 cases deal with spreading wrong information, and 68 cases are about spreading lies.
These add up to 268 cases reported from November 2023 onwards.
In the latest news, Dadaab Member of Parliament Farah Maalim was asked by NCIC to explain some controversial comments about protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
Maalim supposedly said in Somali that he would ‘kill 5000 Gen Z protesters’ if he were Kenya’s president.
NCIC worries these comments might make people feel angry, hateful, or violent toward each other, which goes against Section 13 (1) (a) of the NCI Act and could disrupt how different political groups get along in Kenya.
Even though NCIC asked him to, the MP didn’t show up when they wanted him to.
