Heavy rains from Typhoon Yagi have caused devastating floods in Myanmar, resulting in over a hundred fatalities, according to the Myanmar army.
The army’s statement reports that approximately 320,000 people have been displaced, with 64 individuals still unaccounted for as of the latest update.
Flooding began on Monday, September 9, and by Friday, September 13, more than seventy deaths had already been reported, according to Myanmar state media.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs indicates that the capital, Naypyidaw, has been the hardest hit, with other affected regions including Magway, Bago, Mandalay, Kayah, Kayin, Mon, and Shan.
In response to the disaster, Myanmar’s Ministry of Communications has announced plans to deploy health workers and provide food aid to the affected areas.
However, efforts to collect data and reach the hardest-hit regions are hampered by significant damage to infrastructure, particularly roads.
Scientists have cautioned that Typhoon Yagi could potentially spread further into the western Pacific in the near future.
