Catastrophic floods in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, caused the collapse of walls at a local jail, resulting in the escape of 281 prisoners, according to prison officials.
On Sunday, Umar Abubakar, spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Services, reported that seven of the escaped inmates have been recaptured by security forces.
Abubakar stated that the floods had caused significant damage to the Medium Security Custodial Centre and staff quarters in the city.
Efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitives are currently underway.
Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, experienced its most severe flooding in decades last week.
The disaster was triggered by an overflow from a dam following heavy rainfall, which also devastated a state-owned zoo, releasing crocodiles and snakes into the inundated communities.
The floods have resulted in at least 30 fatalities, according to the country’s emergency management agency.
The disaster has affected approximately one million people, displacing hundreds of thousands into temporary shelters.
