Gachagua Impeachment: Nationwide Public Hearings Begin

The public will have the chance to voice their opinions on the special motion to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office.

This nationwide public participation exercise will occur across all 47 counties.

In Nairobi, residents can express their views at the Bomas of Kenya, the designated collection center for public opinions from constituencies throughout the city.

Gachagua’s attempt to stop the public forums was denied on Thursday.

He argued that such forums should be held in all 290 constituencies, as well as among Kenyans living abroad and in the 1,450 electoral wards where presidential elections take place.

In his petition, he claimed that a one-day public participation exercise was “grossly insufficient” for meaningful engagement.

The High Court rejected his request for interim orders to halt the process and has scheduled a hearing for October 9, 2024.

Gachagua is facing serious allegations in the impeachment motion, including accusations of deepening ethnic divisions among Kenyans, undermining the presidency, violating his oath of office, and contravening the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

Further allegations include the accumulation of sh. 5.2 billion in assets through corrupt practices, inciting public dissent against directives from the Nairobi County government, gross misconduct, and bullying.

The National Assembly has until Tuesday to make a decision regarding the special motion to impeach Gachagua before the matter is referred to the Senate for further consideration.
