Investigators are working urgently to uncover the truth behind the killing of prominent Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, who was shot dead in a suspected targeted attack on the evening of Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
Fresh leads emerged on September 11 after detectives retrieved CCTV footage showing a man talking on his phone as Mbobu passed by moments before his death.
Authorities believe the unidentified man may hold vital information about the fatal shooting, which took place along Magadi Road near the Galleria-Brookhouse area.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since intensified the probe, questioning two suspects who dined with Mbobu earlier that day in Kilimani.
Their vehicles have also been impounded for forensic analysis.
According to the CCTV timeline, Mbobu left his office at 5:11 PM, wearing a blue shirt and tie and carrying a laptop bag. He was seen greeting security guards before driving off in his vehicle.
His route took him through Kounda Street, Wabera Street, Parliament Road, and eventually onto Lang’ata and Magadi Roads, unaware that he was being followed.
Detectives say the man seen on phone, the two questioned individuals, and the impounded cars are central to piecing together the events that led to the lawyer’s assassination.
Mbobu’s murder bears striking resemblance to the earlier killing of politician and lawmaker Charles On’gondo Were on April 30, 2025.
In both cases, the victims were shot in traffic by gunmen on motorbikes and nothing was stolen pointing to a highly calculated execution.
Police reports indicate that Mbobu’s vehicle had slowed in traffic near his Karen home when a gunman, riding as a passenger on a motorcycle, approached his window and opened fire.
The assassin then fled the scene with his accomplice through slow-moving traffic. Mbobu died at the scene, with reports suggesting he was unaware of the threat until the moment he was shot.
A postmortem conducted by government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor revealed that Mbobu was shot eight times, with most of the bullets entering from the right side.
Two bullets were recovered, including one lodged in his left arm, and have been handed over for ballistic analysis.
“Kyalo Mbobu suffered excessive bleeding due to injuries to the neck vessels and spine. The spinal and vascular injuries were severe enough to cause death. He did not die instantly he bled out over a short period,” Dr. Oduor said.
The pathologist emphasized that the volume and placement of gunshots point to a deliberate attempt to kill.
Mbobu, a respected lawyer, university lecturer, and influential figure in Nairobi’s legal and political circles, was alone in his four-wheel-drive vehicle at the time of the attack.
He was just minutes away from his Boyani home in Karen.
His family is now demanding justice. His brother, fellow lawyer James Maluki, has called on the government to leave no stone unturned in investigating the murder.
