Kalonzo Criticises Ruto’s ‘Singapore Dream’ Amid Job Migration Concerns

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has slammed President William Ruto’s ambitious plan to transform Kenya into a first-world nation like Singapore, questioning its feasibility given the ongoing relocation of companies to neighbouring countries.

Speaking on December 21, Kalonzo highlighted that many firms have moved to Tanzania and Uganda, citing reports from the 2023 bipartisan talks and NADCO findings. “How do you make Kenya Singapore when companies are leaving and our youth remain unemployed? Jobs are being exported to Uganda and Tanzania,” he remarked.

Kalonzo described Ruto’s ‘Singapore dream’ as a political ploy ahead of the 2027 elections, contrasting it with Vision 2030, which aimed for Kenya to achieve middle-income status by 2030. “Kenya was expected to be a middle-income country with citizens enjoying a high quality of life. How many Kenyans can even put food on the table?” he questioned.

Ruto’s vision, unveiled during his November 20 State of the Nation address, includes infrastructure projects worth over KSh 5 trillion, funded via a National Infrastructure Fund and a Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Plans encompass 2,500 km of dual carriageways, 28,000 km of tarmacked roads, completion of the Standard Gauge Railway to Malaba, and the construction of 50 mega dams plus hundreds of smaller dams for irrigation. Funding is expected from natural resource revenues and proceeds from privatized national assets, aiming to boost Kenya’s competitiveness and wealth.
