The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has moved to calm public concern, confirming that affordable and existing mobile phones are not prohibited despite recent directives mandating USB Type-C chargers with detachable cables for new devices.
The regulator clarified that the requirement applies strictly to newly imported phones undergoing type approval. Devices already on the market or currently in transit remain fully compliant and legal.
This statement follows a wave of reports suggesting that entry-level handsets could be outlawed, claims the CA dismissed as a misinterpretation of the rules.
According to the authority, the updated standards aim to boost device compatibility, improve safety, cut down electronic waste, and bring Kenya in line with international benchmarks.
The CA reiterated that any phones and tablets approved before 24 March 2026, or already in use across the country, are unaffected by the directive.

Notably, many budget-friendly devices popular in Kenya already meet the requirement, with brands such as Itel, Infinix, Xiaomi, and Samsung having largely transitioned to USB Type-C ports with detachable cables.
