Students at Alliance High School have been sent home after a fire broke out at the institution early on Thursday morning, raising fresh concerns about safety in Kenyan schools.
The incident, which reportedly occurred at around 4am, affected the school’s mattress store. Sources indicated that the prestigious institution could remain closed for an unspecified period as authorities assess the situation and investigate the cause of the fire.
Confirming the incident, Principal David Chomba said the blaze was swiftly contained before it could spread to classrooms, dormitories, or other critical facilities.
“We are grateful to report that the situation was promptly contained and managed by the school administration and relevant teams. Most importantly, all students are safe and accounted for,” Chomba said in a communication to parents.
Although no injuries or major disruptions to learning facilities were reported, the school’s Board of Management and administration resolved to send students home as a precaution.

The school also convened a parents’ meeting on Thursday morning, after which guardians were requested to leave with their children and keep them at home over the weekend.
According to Chomba, the decision was made to safeguard students’ welfare and reassure parents following the incident.
The fire comes amid heightened concern over safety standards in learning institutions, following a string of recent fire outbreaks reported in schools across the country. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Alliance High School incident.
