South Africa’s Biggest City Johannesburg Ranked Most Corrupt –Survey

Johannesburg City has been ranked the most corrupt city in South Africa, the latest data reveals.

According to a survey by NOMBEO, a global crowd-sourced database of perceived crime rates, out of 803 people interviewed, 738 said Johannesburg is the most corrupt city.

For instance, the rate of corruption and bribery in Johannesburg in the recent three years ending April 2023 stands at 92 percent.

The survey which had interviewed more than 800 people as of the end of April 2023 revealed that the problem of using and dealing with drugs (71 percent) was a key driver for the corruption.

Further, the survey revealed that crime in Johannesburg in the recent three years had hit 81 percent.

Last month, local media outlets in the country reported that a South African accountant who was investigating high-level corruption cases in Johannesburg was shot dead along with his son.

Cloete Murray, 50, Murray, who was the liquidator for Bosasa, a company implicated in numerous government contract scandals was shot by unknown gunmen while driving in Johannesburg with his 28-year-old son Thomas.

Apart from corruption, Johannesburg is grappling with other criminal challenges including mugging (81 percent), physical attacks (65 percent), assault and robbery with violence (88 percent) as well as vandalism and theft (82 percent).
