Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba inaugurated the inaugural athletes’ training camp in Isiolo County as part of the Talanta Hela Program’s broader initiative to foster grassroots athletics.
Situated at Kinna Primary School in Garbatula Sub-County, this camp marks the first-ever talent development center in Northern Kenya.
Emphasizing the Ministry of Sports’ dedication, Namwamba affirmed their financial backing for the camp and assured the development of stadium infrastructure in the region.
He encouraged local athletes, highlighting their potential to compete on par with their counterparts.

In expressing his optimism, Namwamba drew parallels between the genetic makeup of the Oromos in Ethiopia and the residents of Isiolo.
He stated, “If you hear names like Haile Gebrselassie in Ethiopia, it means that the next Selassie can come from Isiolo.
Determination is the key.”
Namwamba is committed to enhancing the camp, ensuring proper clothing for athletes, developing stadium facilities, and providing financial support.
Additionally, he called for the integration of other sports in the region, urging residents to embrace activities like football.
“While uplifting this camp, let’s also pay attention to other sports, such as football,” Namwamba urged.
The Isiolo camp is the second initiative under the Talanta Hela Program, following Chepkemel in Uasin Gishu County.
Athletics Kenya, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, aims to establish more than 42 camps nationwide.
