Al shabaab Gunmen Kill Two In Attack In Milihoi, Lamu

At least two people were Tuesday, August 15 killed in an attack by suspected al Shabaab militants in a Mokowe area in Lamu.

Police said the incident happened when the terrorists attacked vehicles traveling toward Mokowe at Milihoi area.

Police and witnesses said the terrorists fired semiautomatic weapons/assault riffles at the vehicle leading to the deaths in the Tuesday morning incident.

This is the latest such incident to happen in the area amid police operations to address the menace.

Police said they had sent a response team to track the gang.

Early this month, the government said up to 60 terrorists involved in an attack in the area were killed.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said the 60 attackers had all been neutralized by security officers in an operation.

“All the people who attacked our people yesterday have been neutralized, all of them,” Kindiki told Members of Parliament on August 2.

But other local sources denied the claims.

The attackers believed to be members of the al Shabaab terror group attacked five vehicles some of which were carrying at least 200 passengers at the intersection of Lamu and Tana River counties.

The operation, Kindiki noted, was made possible due to the frequent patrols by elite security officers along the Lamu / Garsen road.

Kindiki said the government will enhance dominance patrols in the Northern Eastern and Upper Coastal regions to detect and neutralize terror attacks targeting civilians, security officers, critical infrastructure, and personnel, among them teachers, road construction engineers, and hydrologists.

At least five vehicles using the route were attacked in the Tuesday attack.

Others were burnt by the terrorists.

Among the vehicles attacked and damaged include that of Hindi Prisons, which was shot at as the driver used the road but managed to escape.

A police armored personnel carrier, which was responding to the scene was hit on both sides by an improvised explosive devise deflating one of its tyres.

This slowed down their response to the scene.

On the same day, another terror gang targeted a passenger vehicle in Mandera.

One passenger was injured in the attack.

The gang detonated an IED and fired assault weapons targeting a civilian vehicle along the road between Bambo and Jabi-bar injuring a civilian.

The area near the border with Somalia has suffered a series of terrorist attacks.

The state has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Salama, Juhudi, Widho Marafa, Mashogoni, and Ukumbi in Lamu West

The terrorists have been attacking places near the Kenyan border by using guns and explosives leaving dozens dead and many injured.

The recent attacks have forced the government to suspend plans to reopen the Kenya-Somalia border.
