Burundi’s Supreme Court Upholds Life Sentence for Former PM Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni

Burundi’s Supreme Court upheld the life sentence of General Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, the former prime minister, confirming a decision that marked a dramatic fall from grace for the once influential political figure.

The ruling, reported by AFP and attributed to a judicial source, solidifies Bunyoni’s conviction on a range of charges, including accusations of employing witchcraft against President Evariste Ndayishimiye, economic destabilization, and illicit accumulation of wealth.

Bunyoni, who held the prime ministerial post from mid-2020 until his abrupt dismissal in September 2022 amidst allegations of a coup plot, was sentenced in December amid a high profile trial that captured national and international attention.

“Emmanuel Gateretse, President of the Supreme Court, upheld the initial judgment against General Bunyoni and additionally imposed a hefty fine of 22.7 billion Burundi francs (approximately $7.8 million), ordering the immediate seizure of his undisclosed assets,” disclosed a source within the judiciary, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

While Bunyoni maintains the right to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court, legal experts familiar with the case, also requesting anonymity, acknowledge the complexity and gravity of the charges he faces.

At his appeal hearing in late May, Bunyoni reiterated his plea of not guilty, vehemently denying all allegations and seeking complete exoneration from the charges levied against him.

President Ndayishimiye, who succeeded Pierre Nkurunziza in June 2020, initially received international praise for efforts to end Burundi’s diplomatic isolation following years of authoritarian rule.

However, his administration has since faced significant criticism for its perceived failure to address systemic human rights abuses and widespread poverty, factors that continue to plague Burundi despite recent political transitions.

The sentencing of Bunyoni underscores ongoing political tensions within Burundi’s leadership and the judiciary’s role in enforcing accountability amidst allegations of political witchcraft and corruption.

As the country navigates these challenges, the international community remains vigilant, urging transparency and adherence to legal standards in the pursuit of justice and national stability.
