A businessman claims he was robbed Sh6.1 million moments after he had left foreign exchange bureau in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.
Mohamed Hajir went to Gigiri police station on Wednesday November 17 afternoon and reported he had been to a foreign exchange bureau and changed US$49,000 to Kenyan shillings in Kilimani area.
He was supposed to deliver the cash to Eastleigh to his brother who had given him the same.
Hajir had taken a rider from Eastleigh to Kilimani area along Woodvalle Avenue where had converted the cash and was riding back when he was flagged down by a man wearing traffic police uniforms at the junction of Chiromo Lane and Westlands Road.
They were later joined by two others people who were in a salon car whose registration numbers were not taken.
The men grabbed the cash that was in a bag and later bundled Hajir into their car leaving behind the rider at the scene.
He told police they abandoned him at unknown place before he took another rider and made his way to Parklands and later to Gigiri police station where he made the report.
Police are investigating the incident.
In Lavington area, a Chinese national claims a man wearing a traffic police uniform stole his Sh1 million from his car.
Interestingly, the said officer forgot his official cap in the car.
Liz Zhixin told police he was driving his motor vehicle, a Toyota Landcruiser black in colour from Westlands towards Junction Mall, when he was stopped by two traffic officers along Othaya Road.
He said he parked his car besides the road whereby the said officers took his driving licence and the car keys.
According to Zhixin, one of the traffic personnel opened the back door seat and found an envelope containing Sh1 million and took it leaving behind his traffic cap. They left in their personal car whose registration numbers were not captured, which was Toyota Fielder white in colour and drove towards Gitanga Road.
He handed over the traffic police white cap to his lawyer after reporting the case at Dagorreti police station.
Police said they are investigating both incidents, which seem to be related.
The cops are reviewing CCTV footage on the roads the gang used.
These are the latest such incidents to happen in the city.
Police statistics show up to ten violent crimes are reported in major urban areas and the attackers are bold in their missions.
The attacks come in the wake of increased deployment of police in the city, as police take steps to destabilize criminal gangs that regroup after the general election.
Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin says he is committed to dealing with all manners of crimes without favour and in strict conformity with the provisions of the law.
He said they have mobilized resources to address the menace and warned those behind the same their days are numbered.
