Kenya and China have committed to respecting the sovereignty of nations during discussions on the multilateral mission to Haiti mandated by the United Nations Security Council.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi unanimously agreed to uphold universal values and oppose interference in the internal affairs of countries under the banner of democracy and human rights.
In a joint statement, Mudavadi noted, “It was agreed that China will continue to support the mission as well as other peace-building initiatives in Africa, where Kenya is playing a leading role.”
However, this commitment comes amid a High Court ruling declaring the planned deployment of Kenyan police officers to Haiti as illegal, stating that the National Security Council lacks the mandate for such deployments.
During the official visit to Beijing, Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s stance on the One-China Principle, emphasizing that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.
The discussions between the two counterparts also focused on bilateral and multilateral issues, including the achievements of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Kenya and China over the past 60 years.
The Ministers agreed on a Long-term Joint Vision for the next cycle of 60 years, aiming to strengthen the Kenya-China community with a shared future.
Mudavadi expressed gratitude for China’s support in various sectors, such as roads, rail transport, green energy infrastructure, and ICT, contributing to Kenya’s national development priorities.
To further solidify the joint vision, the officials agreed to institutionalize it into their respective foreign policies.
They also discussed the establishment of joint technical teams to work on the details of the vision’s pillars and its implementation plan and framework.
The commitment to maintain high-level exchanges and regular joint technical meetings reflects the dedication to building an even closer China-Kenya community with a shared future in the new era.
The visit concluded with positive remarks from Mudavadi, commending China’s invaluable support toward Kenya’s national development priorities.
