Cholera Outbreak Hits Nanyuki, Linked To Chinese Monkey Parasite

The Ministry of ICT in Kenya has officially confirmed a cholera outbreak in Nanyuki, located in Laikipia County.

The announcement, released on Friday by the Directorate of Public Communications, revealed that a series of diarrheal cases had been documented at the British Army camp in Nanyuki.

In the statement, the Directorate conveyed the severity of the situation, stating, “The British Army in Kenya has confirmed a severe diarrhea outbreak.

A unique parasite sub-type linked to farmed monkeys in China has been identified.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines cholera as an exceptionally contagious disease transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water.

It manifests in severe acute watery diarrhea, with potentially fatal outcomes if not promptly addressed.

The Directorate’s message to the public emphasized the importance of staying informed, practicing hygiene measures, and seeking immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

In alignment with WHO guidelines, the majority of individuals affected exhibit mild or moderate symptoms, with an incubation period ranging from 12 hours to 5 days.

However, a minority may develop acute watery diarrhea with severe dehydration, leading to potential fatality if untreated.
