In Ruiru, Kiambu County, police are on the hunt for three armed robbers involved in a daring incident where they kidnapped a car dealer and a broker, only to crash a stolen car during their escape.
The intricate series of events began on December 1, 2023, when car dealer Kennedy Kimuhu Gitau received a call from broker Brian Karanja, notifying him of a potential buyer in Juja interested in a Prado vehicle.
The trio comprising Gitau, Karanja, and the buyer Robert Sifuna Wekesa set out from a Kiambu road showroom to Juja for a meeting.
Following a test drive near Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, they stopped at a gated house in Juja.
Unexpectedly, three individuals on a motorcycle emerged, instructing Gitau and Karanja to enter the house while Wekesa drove the car inside.
Inside the house, the captors demanded a ransom of sh.2.5 million from each hostage and compelled them to contact their families for the funds.
Three days later, on December 4, the kidnapped duo was tied up and transported in the stolen Prado by two men and a woman.
The dramatic events unfolded when the vehicle collided with another at Juja Equity Bank.
The pursuer of the accosted vehicle, following them to Kahawa Wendani Magunas supermarket, witnessed the stolen vehicle losing control and crashing.
The armed robbers, feigning concern for one of their own, exited the vehicle, leaving the hostages behind.
Boarding a motorcycle, they fired shots in the air and directed the rider towards Juja, abandoning the motorcycle at Kahawa Sukari roundabout and fleeing towards Ruiru.
Law enforcement from Kahawa Wendani police post and Ruiru DCI officers arrived at the scene, recovering spent cartridges outside Magunas supermarket.
Simultaneously, the Prado was towed to Ruiru Police Station for further investigation.
The incident showcases the dramatic rescue of the kidnapped car dealer after the thieves’ escape plan took an unexpected turn.
