Dutch Support Migori’s Fight Against FGM And Economic Growth

The Dutch Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Maarten Brouwer, expressed the ongoing commitment to support Migori County in its efforts to combat Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

During a meeting with Governor Ochillo Ayacko, Brouwer emphasized the collaborative approach involving the Dutch government, the European Union (EU), and their partners to bolster the county’s initiatives against FGM.

Brouwer underscored FGM as a human rights violation against women, stressing the importance of collective action to ensure gender equality and protect women’s health.

He announced plans for the Dutch embassy to engage with Migori County in promoting green energy solutions, particularly through solarization, as an alternative clean energy source.

Highlighting Migori’s strategic position, Brouwer identified opportunities for the county to benefit from the East Africa Community integration, facilitated by initiatives such as the EU-funded Isebania Sirare border post.

Additionally, he mentioned collaboration in the health sector to enhance the well-being of county residents.

Governor Ochillo Ayacko expressed eagerness to collaborate with the Dutch government, particularly in agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and the blue economy, aiming to boost socio-economic development in the county.

Earlier this month, EU Ambassador Mrs. Henriette Geiger and representatives from Poland, Austria, Germany, and Sweden visited Migori to assess its potential in various sectors, including agriculture, livestock, the blue economy, and mining.

The EU’s ongoing support for the Isebania Sirare border post reflects its commitment to advancing East Africa Community integration, facilitating smoother movement of people, and promoting free trade within the region.
