Family Identifies Body Found inside burnt vehicle in Kajiado as probe continues

A family has identified the body of a man who was found burnt in a car in a private farm along the Olkeri–Matasia Road in Kajiado County.

Police and the family identified the victim as Stephen Miroro Ongeri, 74.

Ongeri who hails from Gesusu, Kisii County and lived in Ngong Matasia area is a kin to former Kisii Senator Prof Sam Ongeri.

Ongeri’s body was found inside a motor vehicle that was completely destroyed by fire at the private farm on October 2, 2026, at about 10.30pm.

This was after members of the public alerted police.

Police said they are yet to establish how he died and the motive.

It is not clear if it was a suicide or murder case. Police said they are open to any theory in the case.

He had left his mobile phone and identification card at home.

Witnesses said they saw him drive out of his compound hours before his body was found in the car.

He had his hands tied then as the body burnt, witnesses told police.

Police who visited the scene established that a white Toyota Fielder had been completely burnt.

The vehicle is believed to have caught fire at around 7.30pm while parked about 50 metres off the Olkeri–Matasia Road inside a private farm.

A gas cylinder was also found inside the vehicle alongside the body of Ongeri, which had been burnt beyond recognition.

Crime Scene Investigation officers from Ongata Rongai documented the scene before the human remains were removed and taken to the Nairobi City Mortuary for preservation and further examination.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, with police investigations underway to establish how the vehicle caught fire.

Police said they retrieved details of the car from the National Transport and Safety Authority.

The police found a contact of Ongeri’s relative who he co-owned the car with.

The officers asked the relative to confirm if the car belonged to him and who was driving it.

It was then the family knew their kin had died. They later identified the car and the man.

Ongeri had left home for a local clinic which he ran with one of his children.

It’s not clear what transpired to lead to his death.
