Fatal Crash Involving Miraa Vehicles And Boda Boda Claims Lives On Embu-Nairobi Highway

Several people are feared dead following a tragic road accident involving two miraa transport vehicles and a boda boda motorcycle along the busy Embu–Nairobi highway at Makutano-Mwea in Kirinyaga County earlier today.

The collision, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, involved two high-speed vehicles ferrying miraa to Nairobi. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicles appeared to be racing when one lost control while overtaking and crashed head-on into an oncoming boda boda rider.

Both the boda boda rider and one of the miraa drivers were killed instantly.

“There were two vehicles ferrying miraa. They were moving very fast. In the process, a boda boda rider was hit, and the driver also lost his life,” said an eyewitness.

Another witness recounted the dangerous maneuver that led to the crash:

“They were speeding and overtaking recklessly. One of the cars met a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction as it overtook a tuk-tuk. There was no space. The car collided head-on with the boda boda rider, who died on the spot.”

Local authorities and traffic police responded swiftly to the scene, clearing the wreckage and launching investigations into the cause of the crash.

Preliminary reports point to reckless driving and speeding—longstanding concerns surrounding miraa transport due to the pressure to deliver the perishable commodity quickly.

In a separate incident, a matatu owned by First Son George Ruto, popularly known as Mood, was involved in a minor road accident while en route to the Maili Tisa Park and Chill event.

According to photos seen a traffic officer was pictured assessing the damage to the luxury 14-seater matatu, which sustained a rear dent after being hit from behind by another vehicle. No serious injuries were reported.

George Ruto’s sh 14 million matatu gained national attention after its grand launch at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre on July 18.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has released new data showing that 5,856 people were involved in road crashes between January 1 and March 31, 2025, a drop of 1,908 cases compared to the same period in 2024.

Despite the overall decrease, motorcycles remain a growing concern.

301 motorcyclists lost their lives in the first quarter of 2025, up from 274 in the same period last year.

420 pedestrians, 189 passengers, and 83 drivers were also killed, although these figures showed slight decreases from 2024.

In total, 1,139 people died and 3,316 were seriously injured in road crashes during the first quarter.

Authorities continue to urge motorists and boda boda operators to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws to prevent further loss of life. Investigations into both today’s crashes are ongoing.
