Flood Victims Plead For Improved Conditions At Nyamasao Primary School Shelter

Flood victims in Nyando sub-county are expressing dismay over the dismal state of the rescue center at Nyamasao Primary School, where they sought refuge after their homes were engulfed by floods.

The locals are raising concerns about a looming humanitarian crisis due to the absence of essential sanitation services in the camp.

Jane Atieno, residing at the camp with her two children, laments that the government seems to have overlooked their predicament, and life in the shelter has become unbearable.

According to Atieno, urgent measures are needed to avert the potential outbreak of diseases like cholera and malaria, emphasizing the heightened risk for the victims.

She highlights the critical issues plaguing the shelter, stating, “There is a shortage of water here.

The toilets are unclean, lacking detergent, and sometimes infested with maggots.

We fear the possibility of cholera infection.”

In an interview with Citizen Digital, Atieno implores the national government to implement lasting solutions to address the recurring flooding problem, expressing exhaustion from the constant displacement during rainy seasons.

“We appeal to the government for assistance in constructing a dyke in our village. We require a permanent solution; we are weary and unable to make investments in our homes,” she asserts.
