Police arrested four suspects and recovered 132 assorted mobile phones during an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected phone thieves and handlers of stolen devices in Kayole, Nairobi.
According to police, officers from Kayole Police Station conducted the operation on Monday following information received from members of the public.
The team raided the Nyaura area, where they arrested a suspect, whom police describe as a suspected receiver of stolen mobile phones.
Three other suspects were also arrested. Police suspect the trio is involved in phone-snatching incidents within the city.
During the operation, officers recovered 132 assorted mobile phones, assorted mobile phone motherboards and two laptops, identified as Toshiba and Acer brands.
The recovered items have been retained as exhibits as detectives seek to establish their ownership and determine whether they were stolen.
The four suspects are being held in police custody pending further investigations and arraignment in court.
Police have intensified operations on the gangs behind the stealing of mobile phones and other electronics in urban areas. Some of the stolen gadgets end up in neighbouring countries where
they are refurbished and sold to unsuspecting buyers.
Dozens of suspects have been killed as they try to snatch the gadgets from the owners.
And a middle-aged man was critically injured after he was electrocuted while on an electricity pole in Makueni County on Monday afternoon.
According to police, the incident occurred within the Malili area in Mukaa Sub-County.
The incident was reported after a person on duty noticed flames emanating from a nearby electricity pole and rushed to investigate.
On arrival, the witness found an unidentified middle-aged man engulfed in flames on the ground next to the pole. A ladder was found leaning against the electricity pole.
Police officers responded to the scene, rescued the victim and rushed him to Kilungu Sub-County Hospital in critical condition.
The Kenya Power rescue team from Machakos was notified and responded to the scene to secure the power line and assist with technical intervention.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was electrocuted after coming into contact with live electricity wires while on the pole.
Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led the man to climb the electricity pole.
