Police have launched investigations into the dramatic escape of a fraud suspect who allegedly fled with the help of two armed men while being transported from Bomet to Nairobi.
Detectives said the incident occurred on the night of August 1 along the Narok–Mai Mahiu Highway at Suswa Township.
The escaped suspect was identified as Robert Rono, who had been arrested at Kapkuen Police Station in Bomet County on allegations of obtaining money by false pretences.
Police said the police, a senior officer at Kapkuen Police Station reported that he had booked the suspect out of custody to escort him to Kibra Police Station following a request from detectives based in Kibra.
The officer alleged that he was using his private Subaru motor vehicle and had handcuffed the suspect in the back seat during the journey.
According to the police, the officer slowed down behind another vehicle at Suswa Township when two men, allegedly armed with firearms, suddenly emerged from the darkness and facilitated the suspect’s escape.
The suspects fled the scene, leaving behind the handcuffs that had been used to restrain Robert Rono inside the vehicle.
Officers from Suswa Police Station responded immediately and mounted an extensive search of the area, but the escaped suspect and his alleged accomplices were not found.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the escape, including the reported involvement of the armed men and the events leading up to the incident.
A team of detectives is investigating the incident. They want to know how and why the officer decided to transfer the suspect using a private car and alone.
