Gachagua To Present His Defense In Front Of Senate Plenary

Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will defend himself in the upcoming Senate plenary, responding to the charges brought against him.

This development comes after a motion put forward by Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot to form a special committee for the case failed due to the lack of a seconder.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna chose not to second the motion, which notably impacted the mood within the House.

In response to this situation, Speaker Amason Kingi has scheduled the plenary sessions for an investigation into the charges against Gachagua for Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

This decision underscores the urgency of the matter as both the National Assembly and Gachagua have until the end of Monday to submit their respective evidence.

The impeachment proceedings stem from a historic vote by the National Assembly, where 281 Members of Parliament supported the motion to impeach Gachagua, while 44 voted against it, exceeding the required threshold.

The motion, introduced by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, cited multiple grounds for impeachment, including allegations of gross misconduct, corruption, and undermining the presidency.

Gachagua’s self-representation in the Senate plenary signifies a crucial moment in his defense strategy as he seeks to address the serious accusations leveled against him.

With the stakes high, the upcoming sessions are expected to attract significant public and media attention.

As the Senate prepares for this investigation, both sides will aim to present compelling arguments and evidence.

The outcome of these proceedings will be pivotal, determining whether Gachagua can retain his position or if he will face further consequences as a result of the impeachment.

The political landscape in the country remains charged as Gachagua navigates this challenging phase in his political career.
