Health CS Gazettes Charges For Social Health Insurance Fund

Cabinet Secretary for Health Susan Nakhumicha has officially gazetted the charges for the newly established Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) to be levied on salaried employees.

The gazette notice, dated November 23, 2023, indicates that the SHIF will be enforced from November 22.

“In the exercise of the powers conferred by section 1 of the Social Health Insuarence Act, 2023, the Cabinet Secretary for Health designated the November 22, 2023 as the date on which the Social Health Insuarance Act, 2023, shall come into operation,” the statement reads.

According to Nakhumicha’s announcement, the deductions will be calculated at 2.75 percent of the income of salaried citizens. For example, individuals earning Ksh 10,000, who were previously paying Ksh 400 to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), will now contribute Ksh 275 under the new SHIF scheme.

The revised structure extends to various income brackets; those earning Ksh 50,000 will now pay Ksh 1,375, while those with a monthly income of Ksh 100,000 will contribute Ksh 2,750 to the new health insurance scheme.

Significantly, employees earning Ksh 500,000 will see a notable increase in their contributions. Previously paying Ksh 1,700 to the NHIF, they are now required to contribute Ksh 13,750 to the SHIF.

The move is expected to enhance healthcare coverage and accessibility for the nation’s workforce, albeit with varying financial implications for individuals based on their income levels.
