On Thursday, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) announced they would hold a peaceful protest in Nairobi.
Davji Atellah, the Secretary-General of KMPDU, conveyed their intention in a letter to the Nairobi Regional Police Commander.
The protest revolves around the delayed posting of medical interns and the issue of fees for postgraduate students.
Atellah stated, “We plan to hold a peaceful protest regarding the delayed posting of medical interns and the payment of fees for postgraduate students.
The protest is scheduled for Thursday, February 29, 2024, starting at 9:30 am.”

The demonstrators will march from the Kenya Medical Association Centre in Upper Hill to the Ministry of Health offices and then proceed to the Treasury headquarters downtown.
Atellah emphasized the need for order and safety during the event and requested security assistance from the authorities, saying, “We kindly request your assistance in providing security during this event.”
Last week, Atellah had warned of a nationwide strike in March if over 1,000 medical interns were not employed.
He criticized the Ministry of Health for failing to absorb these medical professionals, which resulted in a lack of medical services for Kenyans.
“All the doctor interns must receive their internship letters by March 1st, or we will go to the Ministry of Health to demand them,” Atellah stated during a press briefing on February 20.
He further warned, “We are notifying the Ministry of Health, the Treasury, the Council of Governors, and the entire country that if we don’t have clarity on intern postings by February 29 and March 1, all doctors in the country will engage in a go-slow.”
