Police in Kisumu County have launched investigations after a hearse transporting a body from Nairobi to Vihiga was ambushed by a gang of armed robbers in the Manyatta area.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Friday near Obuolo Junction at Mowlem Stage, police and witnesses said.
According to police, the driver reported that about 10 assailants emerged onto the road and began pelting the vehicle with stones, forcing him to slow down.
The gang, armed with pangas, clubs and stones, smashed the driver’s side mirror, side windows and rear windscreen before robbing the driver of two mobile phones and his wallet.
Despite the attack, the driver managed to speed away towards Kisumu City as the suspects continued throwing stones at the vehicle.
Police officers on patrol from Kasagam Police Station responded to the scene and secured the area before launching a search for the attackers.
However, no arrests had been made by the time of the report.
The driver and six passengers sustained minor injuries during the incident.
Crime scene officers processed and documented the scene, while investigations and efforts to trace the suspects are ongoing.
A team combed the area on Friday in efforts to get the gang in vain.
A hunt on the gang was ongoing Friday, police said.
Police said they wanted to know if there was more other motives in the attack.
The mourners were enabled to continue with their trip to the intended destination.
And police in Bungoma County have launched investigations after a masked gunman robbed two people at gunpoint before escaping in a waiting vehicle in Kimilili Township.
The robbery occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday shortly after a woman, who works at Maina Banking Agency, had closed the business and was walking home with her 25-year-old nephew.
The pair was confronted by a lone assailant armed with a pistol and wearing a mask.
The gunman ordered them to lie on the ground and surrender their bags.
During the robbery, the suspect fired a shot into the air before stealing a black bag containing a Tecno Spark 8 mobile phone valued at Sh15,000, his national identity card, an Airtel portable router, and another bag containing baby clothes.
Moments after the robbery, a silver Toyota Fielder with an unknown registration number arrived at the scene.
The armed suspect boarded the vehicle, which sped off towards the Kimilili Main Stage.
Police officers visited the scene.
Detectives recovered one spent 9mm cartridge, which was preserved as an exhibit, while Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers documented and processed the scene.
Investigations are underway to identify the suspects and trace the getaway vehicle.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
