History And 2024 Theme Of International Youth Day

International Youth Day is observed annually on August 12 to recognize the significant contributions of young people to societal development and to address the challenges they encounter.

Established by the United Nations in 1999, International Youth Day was first celebrated on August 12, 2000, following a recommendation by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth held in Lisbon.

This day is marked by a range of activities, including awareness campaigns, community concerts, and events that highlight social, economic, and socio-political issues affecting youth worldwide.

The United Nations General Assembly began focusing on youth education and motivation in 1965, approving a declaration to promote peace, respect, and cultural understanding among young people.

Each year, International Youth Day features a specific theme to spotlight various aspects of empowering and supporting the younger generation.

For 2024, the theme is “From Clicks to Development: Digital Youth Pathways to Sustainable Development,” which explores the role of digitalization in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and underscores the crucial contributions of youth in this transformation.

In Kenya, the Gen Z generation celebrated International Youth Day with a concert named “Gen Sisi” held at the Greenpark Terminus car park in Nairobi.

The event featured performances by artists such as Juliani, Khaligraph Jones, Mercy Masika, Nadia Mukami, and Arrow Bwoy.

The celebrations come at a time when Gen Z in countries like Kenya, Uganda, and Bangladesh are actively protesting against poor governance and advocating for change in their respective governments.
