Uganda’s opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, recently shared his thoughts on the missed opportunities for salary raises within the country’s police and army forces had he been elected into office.
During a rally in the Eastern district of Mayuge on a Monday, Kyagulanyi, a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government, expressed his belief that the situation for uniformed personnel could have been more favorable had Museveni not been declared the winner of the January 2021 election.
Kyagulanyi emphasized the benefits that security forces would have received under his leadership, stating, “Let me remind security what you have missed since Mr Museveni stole my election; Shs1m for the lowest-ranking police and UPDF officer” These missed opportunities, according to Bobi Wine, have accumulated over the past two-and-a-half years, approximately 30 months since the disputed election.
He attributed the lack of salary increments to Museveni’s continued rule, implying that it has contributed to their financial difficulties.
At 41 years old, Kyagulanyi has consistently alleged that the previous general election was tainted by irregularities.
He continues to accuse the 78-year-old Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, of manipulating the election results in his favor.
Kyagulanyi, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), secured the second position in the 2021 general election, with Museveni winning his sixth term in office.
Currently, Kyagulanyi is touring various regions of the country to strengthen his party’s grassroots network in preparation for the upcoming polls in 2026.
