Momentum is growing regarding the potential impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with some Members of Parliament (MPs) indicating that the motion is close to being presented.
Reports suggest that signature collection for the motion aimed at removing Gachagua is currently in progress, amid increasing opposition from several leaders, particularly from his home region of Mt. Kenya.
In a suggestive social media post, National Assembly Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro hinted that preparations for the motion have been finalized, which signals escalating difficulties for Gachagua.
“It is done,” Osoro wrote on his Facebook page, implying significant progress in the impeachment efforts.
Earlier, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa and other members of the ruling party mentioned that the motion would likely be tabled in the second week of next month.
Despite facing mounting pressure and isolation within the government, Gachagua remains steadfast, asserting that he will confront the impeachment attempts head-on.
“They should not test us. It will have consequences,” he stated at a previous event.
Discussions aimed at unifying the Mt. Kenya region, perceived by some as tribal politics, have exacerbated Gachagua’s challenges.
He has struggled to maintain his position as a leading figure in the populous Mt. Kenya region, with many leaders now rallying behind Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their preferred representative and connection to President William Ruto.
In a further development, Tana River Senator has submitted a notice of censure motion against Gachagua in the Senate.
If Speaker Amason Kingi approves it, members will have the opportunity to discuss Gachagua’s alleged inappropriate conduct.
While the censure motion does not hold the legal power to remove him from office, its passage could significantly damage his reputation and diminish his political influence.
