The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating an incident in which a suspect that had been arrested collapsed and died at the Matopeni police post, Kayole, Nairobi.

The suspect who had not been identified had been arrested for being drunk and disorderly and taken to the police for processing when he collapsed on Sunday night.

At the post, there were more than 50 other people who had been detained for various crimes, police said.

According to police, the officers on duty responded to the collapse and tried to resuscitate him in vain.

He was rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital where officials confirmed him dead.

Police informed IPOA of the incident on Sunday night.

The agency is mandated by law to investigate such incidents and make recommendations to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution.

Officials want to ascertain the possibility that the man died or whether police negligence is to blame.
