Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has made a political comeback, winning the country’s presidential election after his rival, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday.
In a press conference held at his residence, Bawumia acknowledged Mahama’s victory, stating that he had personally called Mahama to offer his congratulations.
Bawumia also confirmed that Mahama’s party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had secured a win in the parliamentary elections as well.
“Based on our internal tally of the election results, it is clear that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential race decisively,” Bawumia said.
“The NDC has also won the parliamentary elections.
While some final results are still being collated, I do not believe these will alter the overall outcome.”
Bawumia, in an effort to prevent further unrest, chose to concede before the official results were announced.
Reports of scuffles had emerged in several local constituency centers as results continued to trickle in.
“I am making this concession speech ahead of the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to help reduce tensions and maintain peace in our country,” Bawumia stated.
“It is important that the global investment community continues to trust in Ghana’s peaceful and democratic processes.”
He concluded by acknowledging the will of the people, saying, “The people have voted for change, and we humbly accept their decision.”
